“Vladimir Central” is a prison with a centuries-old history

It is known that the beautiful ancient city of Vladimir, one of the historical centers of North-Eastern Rus', is famous not only for the architectural masterpieces of great architects, but also for the fact that it is located on the highway along which convicts were driven to Siberia for a long time. So it’s not at all surprising that one of the city’s museums is dedicated to this topic. Moreover, famous politicians, artists, and military men served their sentences here. In many ways, the exhibition of the Vladimir Central Museum is dedicated to them.

The state house lay on the road that ran east of Moscow, and along it, for many, many months, prisoners were led to the harsh Siberian penal servitude. Today, the beginning of this mournful path bears a rather cynical name - the Enthusiasts Highway.

The Vladimir Central appeared in one of the oldest Russian cities back in the 18th century, during the reign of Empress Catherine II. But the prison received its modern name only at the beginning of the 20th century. In those days, terrorists, coup participants and other dangerous “elements” were kept here. Some of them, after they left this vale of sorrow and the revolution happened, sent their former opponents here. For example, one of the prisoners during the Russian Empire was the future party functionary Frunze. But this prison is most famous and associated with the terrible time of Soviet repression of the 30-50s. A great many people disliked by the authorities were imprisoned within the walls, including former prominent party leaders, actors, doctors, ordinary workers and children of white officers. It is difficult to imagine how many people found their final refuge in the Vladimir Central: they were tortured in dungeons or shot in the prison yard. After World War II, the prison added new “guests” - these were German prisoners of war.

The gloomy building still bears its sad cross. It is all the more surprising that in 1996 a museum was opened here. Its exhibition includes records of famous prisoners, crafts, photographs and originals of various, usually sad, documents. It is in the Vladimir Central Museum that you can become more familiar with the history of this institution, from its inception to the present day.

In addition, the exhibition includes shackles, stocks and other devices for controlling prisoners. Using wax figures and “interior” items, some moments from the life of those serving sentences are illustrated. The museum makes a strong, but rather gloomy impression. The proximity of an active prison, which is very depressing with its dark atmosphere, also has an effect.

Why is it called that?

In 1906, the prison received central status , which gave rise to the abbreviated name “central”. In those days, the bulk of prisoners were political figures.

In a modern prison, the population of convicts has been significantly expanded, but the name “Vladimir Central” is firmly entrenched. Officially, the prison is called the institution FKU T-2 of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Vladimir Region .

Prison foundation

Immediately after becoming familiar with the decree, the Vladimir viceroyal government ordered the architect Nikolai von Berk to develop a project and draw up an estimate for the construction of a provincial “worker’s house.”

As a result, it was decided to limit ourselves to the construction of four huts with canopies and closets, as well as a square log house with a width and length of 9 arshins.

More than 145 rubles were spent on the construction of this state house from the provincial treasury, and already in August 1783 the prison was opened.

What do you associate with the city of Vladimir?

With beautiful ancient temples and monasteries on the banks of the Klyazma River? With historical monuments and world heritage sites?

With interesting museums, where you can learn in detail about famous people and events of the city?

That’s all true. But even if you’ve never been into chanson, it’s unlikely that you’ve never heard Mikhail Krug’s “superhit” “Vladimir Central,” and, willy-nilly, Vladimir is associated with this institution. And considering that, according to statistics, almost a quarter of the Russian population is either behind bars at the moment or has been behind bars before, the prison topic is very interesting to modern society.

And no one has canceled the proverb “out of pocket and out of prison.”

However, the Vladimir Central is also a very historical object.

He appeared back in the days

Assumption Cathedral

Many people may be surprised by the beautiful city of Vladimir. Where to go if you are a religious and believing person? Be sure to go to the Assumption Cathedral, which is the most important architectural monument. It is distinguished by the fact that it was created from white stone. Belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church. There is a museum on site. Let us note that it was this cathedral that became the prototype of the Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin. By the way, there are still frescoes by Andrei Rublev here.

Today it is a functioning cathedral, where services are regularly held. However, there are also disadvantages. Let us note that many frescoes are in disrepair due to the fact that the required temperature and humidity are not observed. As for the shrines, there are the relics of many saints, as well as lists of three icons, namely Vladimir, Maksimov and Bogolyubov. Tourists will be pleasantly surprised by the interior appearance of the cathedral. It is distinguished by its particular solemnity and simplicity, which allows you to create a surprisingly sublime, but at the same time, light perception. Now you know where in Vladimir you can go to admire the beautiful architectural monuments and wonderful religious buildings. But we forgot about another key cathedral.
